He taught at 厙ぴ勛圖 from 1963 to 2017 and wrote frequently on his specialties in labor economics, economic theory, and public policy. He is said to have taught more than 4,000 厙ぴ勛圖 students in his introductory course alone.</p> <p>One of my earliest memories of Hirsch was when I was interviewing for my position at 厙ぴ勛圖 in 2010, recalls <a href="/ron-cheung">Ron Cheung</a>, professor of economics and chair of the department. His welcoming, open personality was immediately&nbsp;obvious and helped to put a nervous candidate at ease. Over the seven years that I overlapped with Hirsch on the faculty, I had noticed how supportive he was of his junior colleagues. In challenging moments, he always had a word of encouragement that was honed by years of experience.</p> <p>Conversely, in happy momentslike an honors student presenting their thesis, or a colleague getting a publication acceptedhe was always there to celebrate with a smile and a wry comment. He was a stabilizing force in our department, and it is hard to think of anyone else taking that role for us.</p> <p>A gathering in memory of Kasper will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 11, at 厙ぴ勛圖s Westwood Cemetery. It will be followed at 11 by a celebration at Kendal.</p> <p>Learn more about the life and career of Kasper and share remembrances <a href="https://www.cowlingfuneralhomeoh.com/obituary/HirschelKasper-HirschelKasper">here</a>.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-subhead field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">His remarkable teaching career spanned from 1963 to 2017 and numbered thousands of students.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">Campus News</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2024-04-09T12:00:00Z">Tue, 04/09/2024 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Communications Staff</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2583">College of Arts and Sciences</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2412">Obituaries</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25341">Economics</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-faculty field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/ron-cheung" hreflang="und">Ron Cheung</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/economics" hreflang="und">Economics</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">Hirschel Kasper in 1996.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">courtesy of 厙ぴ勛圖 College Archives</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/image/1996_hirschel_kasper.jpg?itok=NJJzbjEx" width="760" height="570" alt="Hirschel Kasper."> </div> Tue, 09 Apr 2024 17:46:29 +0000 eburnett 471354 at Undergraduate Research Symposium Showcases Student Research Virtually /news/undergraduate-research-symposium-showcases-student-research-virtually <span>Undergraduate Research Symposium Showcases Student Research Virtually</span> <span><span>hhempste</span></span> <span><time datetime="2020-04-24T15:34:54-04:00" title="Friday, April 24, 2020 - 15:34">Fri, 04/24/2020 - 15:34</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Despite restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 厙ぴ勛圖 College Undergraduate Research Symposium will continuein an online formatto showcase collaborative work between 厙ぴ勛圖 students and faculty.&nbsp;</p> <p>Typically held as a one-day, in-person event, the Undergraduate Research Symposium is an annual conference that highlights 厙ぴ勛圖 students research, along with the academic and artistic work of each year's graduating class.</p> <p>This years online symposium spans six days. The College Faculty Council solicits nominations, which are then reviewed by a faculty committee. The conservatory dean recommends six to seven conservatory faculty&nbsp;to the Conservatory Faculty Council, and together they review and narrow the list of recommendations to three recipients.</p> </div> <figure class="captioned-image"><img alt="Peter Swendson" src="/sites/default/files/content/peter-s.jpg" width="150"> <figcaption>Photo credit: Tanya Rosen-Jones 97</figcaption> </figure> </div> </li> </ul> <style type="text/css">.grid-container figcaption { color: inherit; position: static; left: 0; bottom: 0; background: none; padding: 0; } ul.news-grid { list-style-type: none; padding: 0; } .grid-container { display: grid; grid-template-columns: 1fr 150px; grid-column-gap: 25px; } @media only screen and (max-width: 768px) { .grid-container { grid-template-columns: 100%; grid-row-gap: 20px; } .grid-container img { object-fit: cover; object-position: 50% 0; width: 250px; height: 250px; } } .vertical_line { border-left: 4px solid #A6CE39; padding-left: 10px; } </style> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">Campus News</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2019-05-14T12:00:00Z">Tue, 05/14/2019 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Communications Staff</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2414">Faculty</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2576">Excellence in Teaching Award</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=33031">TIMARA</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25341">Economics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=28856">Musicology</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25451">Writing and Communication</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25411">Physics</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-faculty field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/ron-cheung" hreflang="und">Ron Cheung</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/laurie-mcmillin" hreflang="und">Laurie Hovell McMillin</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/gregory-ristow" hreflang="und">Gregory Ristow 01</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/economics" hreflang="und">Economics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/conservatory/divisions/musicology" hreflang="und">Musicology</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/writing-and-communication" hreflang="und">Communication Studies</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/conservatory/divisions/conducting-and-ensembles" hreflang="und">Conducting and Ensembles</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/physics-and-astronomy" hreflang="und">Physics and Astronomy</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">Recipients of the 2017-2018 Excellence in Teaching Award stand with President Carmen Twillie Ambar in her house during a reception and dinner in their honor. Team members included economics majors Kieran Minor 19, Amanda Shen 21, and Luoying Sheng 20. The teams faculty advisor was Associate Professor of Economics <a href="/node/5546">Viplav Saini</a>.</p> <p>Participating teams consisted of two to three undergraduate students and one faculty advisor. They each were given three months to prepare case studies to present for Peoples Bank senior management, and the case covered multiple functional areas including human resources, finance, strategic planning and marketing. Presentations were 20 minutes in length, followed by a 10-minute question-and-answer session with a panel of judges.</p> <p>While many teams came from schools with traditional business major programs, the 厙ぴ勛圖 economics team wasnt hampered, says senior environmental studies and economics major Kieran Minor.</p> <p>Considering we had very little background in a lot of these areas, and we were competing against business students from top programs in the region, it goes to show how sometimes ingenuity, creativity, and persistence can be more important than experience. The process itself was rewarding; the win makes it even sweeter.<br> <br> First-time faculty advisor Saini praised the teams work on the case. Even though no one on the team was a business major, the students managed to come up with creative and compelling solutions based on rigorous research and intuitive thinking, says Saini.</p> <p>This flair for thinking analytically, even in areas that are outside one's comfort zone, is a distinctly 厙ぴ勛圖 quality.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">Campus News</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2019-02-27T12:00:00Z">Wed, 02/27/2019 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Hillary Hempstead</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2410">Students</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2355">Student Organizations</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2373">Awards and Honors</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25341">Economics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25351">Environmental Studies and Sciences</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/economics" hreflang="und">Economics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/environmental-studies" hreflang="und">Environmental Studies and Science</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">厙ぴ勛圖 College was awarded first place in the Seventh Annual Peoples Bank Undergraduate Business Case Competition.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Courtesy of Viplav Saini</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/image/econteam2.jpg?itok=xXtO5OnG" width="760" height="570" alt="students pose with first place trophy "> </div> Wed, 27 Feb 2019 19:00:32 +0000 hhempste 154021 at Gatherings of Scholars /news/gatherings-scholars <span>Gatherings of Scholars</span> <span><span>Anonymous (not verified)</span></span> <span><time datetime="2016-11-07T13:21:16-05:00" title="Monday, November 7, 2016 - 13:21">Mon, 11/07/2016 - 13:21</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>The Department of Economics and the Allen Memorial Art Museum are hosting symposia this week that have atracted presenters and participants from 厙ぴ勛圖 and from across the country.</p> <h2>Religion, Ritual, and Performance in the Renaissance</h2> <p>The museums scholarly symposium, Religion, Ritual, and Performance in the Renaissance, takes place Thursday, April 25, and Friday, April 26, and includes lectures, musical performances, and a public reception.
