The first rounds were adjudicated by Conservatory faculty, while the public final round was adjudicated by a guest jury.

This year, concerto so opportunities were won by clarinetist Juan Pedro Espinosa Monteros, cellist Drew Dansby, pianist Jiongli Wang, and violinist Maya Irizarry Lambright—all fourth-year students. They will each present full performances of their winning pieces in concerts on four Friday evenings in Finney Chapel. Each performance will also be streamed live at concert time.

Three of the young artists will collaborate with the سԹ Orchestra and سԹ Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Raphael Jiménez. And, this year there is an سԹ “first.” Later this month, Dansby will perform David Baker’s 1987 Concerto for Cello and Jazz Band, which will be accompanied by an ensemble of students from سԹ's Jazz Division.

Performances get underway on Friday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m., with Juan Pedro Espinosa Monteros and the سԹ Chamber Orchestra leading the way in Carl Nielsen's Clarinet Concerto. The program also includes Gioachino Rossini's Overture to William Tell and Alberto Ginastera Variaciones concertantes, Op. 23.

Meet the soloist

Born and raised in Ecuador, clarinetist Juan Pedro Espinosa Monteros studies with Professor Richard Hawkins. His quite notable professional achievements include an appointment as principal clarinetist of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Guayaquil, under the direction of conductor Dante Anzolini. He joined the orchestra in 2019 and played in the ensemble for three seasons as the youngest member in the organization. He made his solo debut with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Loja at the age of 15 and has since served consistently as a substitute clarinetist with that ensemble. And in 2017, he won the gold medal at the Solo Competition of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ecuador—the first woodwind player to earn this prize—securing his appearance as soloist with the orchestra. He has also performed as a soloist with the symphony orchestras of Guayaquil and Cuenca.

Q&A

How did you come to choose the Nielsen Concerto?

I picked the Nielsen clarinet concerto because my heart beats fast whenever I play it. I get excited, and it is a feeling that I try to give to the people that listen to me. I want the audience to be as enthusiastic about the music as I am. This concerto is like a roller coaster of emotions.

What has the piece taught you about your playing and how to reach an audience?

This concerto is an extremely difficult piece for the soloist and orchestra. And working on it has taught me a lot about patience. Nielsen’s writing allows for tons of freedom and variety. It lets me express myself a lot. It is one of the pieces where I can do more and give the work a little bit of my personality.

When you think back on your time at سԹ, what stands out about the experience of going to school here?

Friends and music. سԹ is a special place. As an international student, the conservatory has been like a second home, people are welcoming and warm, and the sense of community is always there. I have felt seen and cared for by all the friends I’ve made through music here.

Clarinetist Juan Pedro Espinosa Monteros kicks off the festivities on April 5

News Story

Thu, 04/04/2024 - 12:00

Cathy Partlow Strauss ’84

Conservatory

Conservatory of Music

Concerto Winners

Students

International Students

Clarinet

Richard Hawkins

Raphael Jiménez

Conducting and Ensembles

Winds, Brass, and Percussion

Fourth-year clarinetist Juan Pedro Espinosa Monteros.

Off

false

Tanya Rosen-Jones

Fri, 05 Apr 2024 04:30:56 +0000 cstrauss 471270 at سԹ Ensembles Perform for United Nations at Carnegie Hall /news/oberlin-ensembles-perform-united-nations-carnegie-hall سԹ Ensembles Perform for United Nations at Carnegie Hall eburnett Thu, 11/10/2022 - 16:47

سԹ student musicians will take to the stage of New York City’s Carnegie Hall in December for a closed concert before the General Assembly of the United Nations.

The performance is part of a wide-ranging new partnership between سԹ, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research New York Office (UNITAR NYO), and the Global Foundation for the Performing Arts (GFPA). Announced in September, the relationship is intended to promote improved access to education for students around the world and to enhance quality of life through higher education and arts training.

Carnegie Hall in New York City

The سԹ Orchestra and سԹ College Choir, joined by performers representing the conservatory ensembles Musical Union and سԹ Gospel Choir, as well as musicians of the United Nations, will share the stage of Carnegie’s Stern Auditorium. A public performance of the Carnegie Hall program is scheduled for سԹ’s Finney Chapel on Tuesday evening, November 29.

“At سԹ, we believe deeply in the power of music, and the arts more broadly, to foster connections between individuals and facilitate expansive new opportunities and access,” says William Quillen, dean of سԹ Conservatory. "We are deeply honored to join in the global conversation with our partners at UNITAR and the GFPA, and we are so very proud to share our belief in the transformative power of music through this remarkable concert experience for our students.”

Annual concerts are a U.N. tradition, though previous performances have typically featured only professional musicians. This year’s event is made possible through the support of the U.N.’s presenting partners: the Member States of Costa Rica, Ecuador, Hungary, Monaco, Oman, Rwanda, and Singapore.

Created in 1963, UNITAR is dedicated to developing high-quality learning opportunities for United Nations delegates. The organization believes that a sustainable world is one where people can escape poverty and enjoy decent work without harming the earth's essential ecosystems and resources. UNITAR’s partnership with سԹ represents the group’s first major foray into undergraduate cultural arts education. A longtime partner with UNITAR, the GFPA promotes education in the arts and support to individuals engaged in the performing arts through cross-cultural exchange.

سԹ is one of a small number of U.S. institutions of higher education invited to take part in the initiative—and the only higher ed partner focused on undergraduate study.

The partnership will create new opportunities for students worldwide to know and discover سԹ. The first students selected through the program may begin as early as fall 2023. The agreement may also extend to the implementation of joint programs based on performance, research, conferences, and other experiences. A separate facet of the partnership, focusing on teaching English for speakers of other languages, is also being developed and would be hosted at سԹ.

The December 2 concert at Carnegie Hall will be led by سԹ Professor of Conducting Raphael Jiménez. It features artist Byron Wei-Xin Zhou as piano soloist for the Rachmaninoff, as well as four accomplished international vocal soloists: سԹ Conservatory alumni mezzo-soprano Kathryn Leemhuis ’05 and tenor Joshua Blue ’16, and a pair of world-renowned artists invited by UNITAR, baritone Marco Chingari and soprano Sarah Tisba of Italy.

“We could not be more excited by the invitation to participate in such a special event,” says Jiménez, who also led the سԹ Orchestra in Carnegie Hall performances in 2019 and 2013. “Every aspect of it makes it a unique experience for our students: the occasion, the venue, the audience, and the repertoire, which includes the awe-inspiring Beethoven Symphony No. 9. I cannot think of a more appropriate occasion and place to play this universal hymn of brotherhood.”

“Music is a universal language and a powerful tool for cultural exchange. Its many positive spirits are the elements required for transformative solutions, and it will help to lead us through this watershed moment,” says pianist Zhou, who performed a solo recital for the 2021 U.N. Gala at Carnegie Hall. “As a musician, I firmly believe that utilizing music could promote the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals and eventually lead us to a better future.”

For سԹ’s student musicians, the December U.N. concert marks the first of two engagements at Carnegie Hall in a span of less than two months: The orchestra and choral ensembles return for a public performance in Stern Auditorium on January 20.

Learn more on the United Nations Partnership page at سԹ.edu.

The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) was established in 1963 pursuant to a United Nations General Assembly resolution. We talked to clarinetist Jeremy Reynolds about his recital experience.

Could you describe your recital?

My recital was spunky! I performed an eclectic mix of new and old music in Warner; each piece was fairly short, so I kept the program moving along. It was probably the fastest hour of my life. I wanted to play well for colleagues and teachers who’ve helped me develop over the past four years, but especially for my visiting family members who don’t hear me play as much as they used to. Recitals are always an insane mash of anxiety and adrenaline, fear and fun. I’ll remember it fondly.

What’s the most challenging decision you had to make in planning your recital?

Picking out music that offers something for non-conservatory-trained family and friends and fellow students alike can be tricky—it took a while to hammer out the final program.

What or who inspires you?

My teacher, Richard Hawkins, of course!

What strategies do you use to prepare for a big performance?

1. Prepare early. I never cram practice, and if I start far enough in advance I don’t have to. I checked out some of the music for this program in the beginning of the fall semester and slowly worked it into my daily routines. I also started rehearsing as early as possible. A little bit of work at a time adds up quickly.

2. Exercise. No matter how well prepared I am, I still get nervous and jittery as much as a week or two before a big concert. I like racquetball or running or whatever really takes the edge off those nerves and gets rid of excess energy. Also, as a wind player, better cardio health equals better air support! Its a win-win.

3. Sleep. As much as possible. If the choice is between practicing, exercising, or sleeping, then choose sleep. Always.

What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?

I’ve narrowed down my graduate school options to either USC or Syracuse’s arts journalism programs. I’d love to promote classical music through writing, whether for print or digital media after graduating.
