Selected through سԹ’s Winter Term Office, he collaborated with local artists to create murals that promote artistic expression and enhance public spaces. The project reflects his belief in art as a tool for connection, engagement, and community building.</p><p>Reflecting on this work, Mufalo says it strengthened his commitment to using visual art to shape how people perceive themselves, others, and the world around them. “Today, my artistic practice is driven not only by aesthetics or self-expression, but also by a desire to communicate ideas and provoke thoughtful reflection.”&nbsp;</p><hr><p><em>To learn more about Projects for Peace and other grants at سԹ, check out </em><a href="/center-engaged-liberal-arts" data-entity-type="node" data-entity-uuid="068ff5e8-2a7e-4726-91b0-7d9995d4c79e" data-entity-substitution="canonical" title="Center for Engaged Liberal Arts"><em>CELA</em></a><em>.</em></p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-subhead field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">The Bonner scholar and artist-in-residence uses experiential learning to shape creative practice and global engagement.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">News Story</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2026-05-01T12:00:00Z">Fri, 05/01/2026 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Swaranya Sarkar ’28</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=3846">Engaged Liberal Arts</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/neuroscience" hreflang="und">Neuroscience</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/art" hreflang="und">Studio Art</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/2026-05/MufaloMufalo.jpg?itok=D5jw1xyL" width="750" height="542" alt="Mufalo Mufalo"> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-article-header field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">0</div> Fri, 01 May 2026 18:47:27 +0000 dfrezza 783219 at Dylan Hwang ’26 Connects Chemistry to Patient Care /news/dylan-hwang-26-connects-chemistry-patient-care <span>Dylan Hwang ’26 Connects Chemistry to Patient Care</span> <span><span>dfrezza</span></span> <span><time datetime="2026-04-29T15:17:56-04:00" title="Wednesday, April 29, 2026 - 15:17">Wed, 04/29/2026 - 15:17</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>For Dylan Hwang ’26, a semester-long internship at Stratificare, a Singapore-based medical technology company, was particularly eye-opening. The experience helped him see the technical details of analytical and biomedical science come to life in an industry setting.</p><p>A <a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/chemistry-biochemistry" data-entity-type="node" data-entity-uuid="08db65f2-80ae-4a7d-bcf9-9a54b52d7c26" data-entity-substitution="canonical" title="Chemistry and Biochemistry">biochemistry</a> major, Hwang had spent the previous semester studying analytical chemistry, where he learned various forms of experimental instrumentation and methodologies used to examine the chemical nature of compounds. While he appreciated the precision and rigor of these techniques, he still wondered how analytical methods played a meaningful role in real-world applications.</p><p>A few months later, he began his internship at Stratificare, where he saw firsthand the development of diagnostic tests for severe dengue fever progression and the efficacy of radioembolization treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma. Stratificare’s work relied on many of the analytical techniques Hwang had studied in class—methods essential for gauging how diseases progress.</p><p>Through this experience, Hwang came to see that even a field like analytical chemistry—often perceived as methodical and narrow in scope—revealed itself as a critical foundation for tools that can fundamentally change people’s lives.</p><p>Hwang’s CELA experiences have given him not only a strong technical foundation but also the confidence to keep exploring. After graduating, he will join a neurobiology lab at Boston University School of Medicine, where he will study the mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.</p><p>“My CELA experiences have been foundational in getting me here,” Hwang says. “Not just in building technical research skills, but in shaping how I think about science and my place within it. I’m excited to deepen my experience in biomedical research before applying to a PhD program, where I hope to pursue these questions at the highest level.”</p><hr><p><em>To learn more about exciting opportunities like Dylan's, check out the </em><a href="/career/set/internship-plus" data-entity-type="node" data-entity-uuid="9ca131a0-e476-42fe-acdc-1c7cd99a0e19" data-entity-substitution="canonical" title="Internship+ Program"><em>Internship+ Program</em></a><em>.</em></p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-subhead field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">A CELA-supported internship in Singapore reveals how analytical science drives medical breakthroughs.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">News Story</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2026-04-29T12:00:00Z">Wed, 04/29/2026 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Marcus Jensen ’27</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=3846">Engaged Liberal Arts</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25246">Biochemistry</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/chemistry-biochemistry" hreflang="und">Chemistry and Biochemistry</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/2026-04/ProfessionalHeadshot_circle.png?itok=RbXT86Sz" width="760" height="725" alt="Dylan Hwang"> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-article-header field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">0</div> Wed, 29 Apr 2026 19:17:56 +0000 dfrezza 783152 at Connecting Science Across Disciplines and Environments /news/connecting-science-across-disciplines-and-environments <span>Connecting Science Across Disciplines and Environments</span> <span><span>dfrezza</span></span> <span><time datetime="2026-04-24T09:58:29-04:00" title="Friday, April 24, 2026 - 09:58">Fri, 04/24/2026 - 09:58</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>The <a href="/center-engaged-liberal-arts" data-entity-type="node" data-entity-uuid="068ff5e8-2a7e-4726-91b0-7d9995d4c79e" data-entity-substitution="canonical" title="Center for Engaged Liberal Arts">Center for Engaged Liberal Arts</a> (CELA) has shaped Luke De Carlo-McCann’s scientific perspective and postgraduate plans, providing sustained opportunities for interdisciplinary research, experiential learning, and professional development.</p><p>During summer 2025, De Carlo-McCann, a <a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/geosciences" data-entity-type="node" data-entity-uuid="053e4226-7f40-4232-b0b4-d166487b09a6" data-entity-substitution="canonical" title="Geosciences">geosciences</a> major, participated in the <a href="/undergraduate-research/osri" data-entity-type="node" data-entity-uuid="7ae83b21-9b73-4a7c-87b3-123ac3b7c8d9" data-entity-substitution="canonical" title="سԹ Summer Research Institute">سԹ Summer Research Institute</a> (OSRI) with support from <a href="/career" data-entity-type="node" data-entity-uuid="6452e518-3c19-4b2d-b0ed-fbeb858118c9" data-entity-substitution="canonical" title="Career Exploration and Development">Career Exploration and Development</a>’s (CED) <a href="/career/set/internship-plus" data-entity-type="node" data-entity-uuid="9ca131a0-e476-42fe-acdc-1c7cd99a0e19" data-entity-substitution="canonical" title="Internship+ Program">Internship+ program</a>. Over 10 weeks, he conducted research on shellfish ecology and environmental conditions in marine systems, building on work from previous summers. The program offered him a rare opportunity to engage deeply with his research while reflecting on how his coursework informs his scientific questions.&nbsp;</p><p>“OSRI gave me sustained time to focus on my research and to think critically about how the ideas I encounter in the classroom shape the questions I ask as a scientist,” he says.</p><p>Through this experience, De Carlo-McCann developed a stronger appreciation for the interdisciplinary nature of his work. His geosciences coursework, including Paleontology and Evolution of the Earth, provided a foundation for understanding long-term environmental change, while his studies in chemistry and biology informed his understanding of the chemical and biological processes influencing shellfish growth and survival.&nbsp;</p><p>“During OSRI, I began to see how these fields are not separate, but deeply intertwined,” he says. “The questions I pursue require drawing from each of them and bringing those ideas together.”</p><p>OSRI also emphasized the importance of communicating research beyond academic settings. De Carlo-McCann participated in community-facing programming such as Research Radio and informal research share-outs, where he practiced presenting complex scientific ideas to interdisciplinary audiences. These experiences strengthened his ability to communicate his work clearly and effectively. At the end of the summer, he presented his research to the full OSRI cohort, helping him synthesize his findings and build confidence in public speaking. This preparation supported his upcoming presentation at the Geological Society of America conference in Loreto, Baja California Sur, Mexico.</p><p>After سԹ, De Carlo-McCann will join the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Homer, Alaska, as a biological science technician. In this role, he will conduct field-based ecological monitoring and collaborate with scientists and land managers, gaining hands-on experience in the stewardship of public lands.&nbsp;</p><p>“I’m excited to immerse myself in the daily realities of field-based science and to learn directly from those working in these ecosystems,” he says.</p><p>His experiences through CELA have shaped not only his career path but also his understanding of science as both an intellectual and human endeavor.&nbsp;</p><p>“The most meaningful learning often happens outside the classroom,” he says, pointing to fieldwork, collaboration, and navigating uncertainty as critical components of his growth.</p><p>Looking ahead, De Carlo-McCann plans to pursue a graduate degree in natural resource management, with a focus on Arctic and sub-Arctic ecosystems. He views his upcoming work in Alaska as an opportunity to continue developing as a scientist while deepening his understanding of northern environments.&nbsp;</p><p>“This next chapter is as much about exploration as it is about preparation,” he says.</p><p>De Carlo-McCann is a nominee for the CELA Award,&nbsp;recognizing his commitment to connecting academic inquiry with experiential learning and his contributions to interdisciplinary research.</p><hr><p><em>To learn more about student support available to you, check out the </em><a href="/center-engaged-liberal-arts" data-entity-type="node" data-entity-uuid="068ff5e8-2a7e-4726-91b0-7d9995d4c79e" data-entity-substitution="canonical" title="Center for Engaged Liberal Arts"><em>Center for Engaged Liberal Arts</em></a><em> for research, internship, and career resources.</em></p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-subhead field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">CELA aids Luke De Carlo-McCann ’26 in integrating research, communication, and fieldwork toward a career in natural resource management.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">News Story</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2026-04-28T12:00:00Z">Tue, 04/28/2026 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Nyrobi Whitfield ’26</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=3846">Engaged Liberal Arts</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/geosciences" hreflang="und">Geosciences</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/2026-04/LukeDeCarloMcCann.jpg?itok=rCeTOTAL" width="760" height="760" alt="Luke De Carlo-McCann"> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-article-header field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">0</div> Fri, 24 Apr 2026 13:58:29 +0000 dfrezza 783081 at From Camp to Classroom: Supporting Diverse Learners /news/camp-classroom-supporting-diverse-learners <span>From Camp to Classroom: Supporting Diverse Learners</span> <span><span>dfrezza</span></span> <span><time datetime="2026-04-23T15:26:37-04:00" title="Thursday, April 23, 2026 - 15:26">Thu, 04/23/2026 - 15:26</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>For Ariana Ofori '26, working as a special-needs camp counselor through CELA’s <a href="/career/set/internship-plus" data-entity-type="node" data-entity-uuid="9ca131a0-e476-42fe-acdc-1c7cd99a0e19" data-entity-substitution="canonical" title="Internship+ Program">Internship+</a> program last summer&nbsp;seamlessly connected to her studies in <a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/psychology" data-entity-type="node" data-entity-uuid="382e130d-10dd-4b3d-9e0b-894ba3b1fe62" data-entity-substitution="canonical" title="Psychology">psychology</a> and <a href="/education-studies" data-entity-type="node" data-entity-uuid="abce55a2-35c5-403c-9de0-f558e6a616cc" data-entity-substitution="canonical" title="Education Studies">education studies</a>.</p><p>“Disability has many faces; every interaction I had with my campers was unique, each with different needs,” Ofori says. Run by the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR), the STRONG Scholars Program provides first-year students with specialized mentoring and resources to help them adapt to and thrive in their STEM journey. As her first research endeavor, Shende spent her first-year winter term in a computational astrophysics lab with Professor Jillian Scudder.</p><p>Soon after, Shende earned a research role with XR Access, a Cornell Tech initiative that aims to make virtual reality programs more accessible for people with disabilities. There, she found a deeper sense of purpose in the human impact of her work.</p><p>Shende continued her journey as a computer science researcher during her second year, where she clarified her interest in making technologies such as AI more accessible across sectors. One of her projects was designing a generative AI program to make visual art more accessible to blind and low vision (BLV) users, which led her to publish a paper and present at the 2024 AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence.</p><p>At سԹ, where she’s majoring in <a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/computer-science">computer science</a> and <a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/mathematics">mathematics</a>, Shende is active in the undergraduate research community. She joined BRANCHES as a community leader, helping to create inclusive programming and support networks for STEM students. She later became a research ambassador for OUR, guiding students as they entered the undergraduate research space.</p><p>Shende also utilized resources from the <a href="/career">Career Exploration and Development (CED) office</a> to expand her understanding of technology from policy and economic viewpoints. She worked with the U.S. State Department’s Diplomacy Lab and served as a student delegate to the Athens Democracy Forum, examining AI and other technologies from the perspective of governance and public policy.</p><p>In addition, Shende volunteers at the Educational Service Center of Northeast Ohio, where she supports adult learners navigating barriers such as childcare and technology access. “I am building a provider–service database and prototyping a web platform and Large Language Model-based assistant that guides learners toward appropriate programs and enables smoother, more accountable handoffs.”</p><p>Shende was selected as a Goldwater Scholar and spent last summer at the MIT Summer Research Program in the Media Lab. “Altogether, my CELA experiences have grounded my academic journey in purpose, equity, and community. They shaped the researcher I am now and the one I hope to become as I move into graduate study and work at the intersection of technology, policy, and society.”</p><p>Shende is a nominee for the CELA Award, recognizing outstanding engagement and achievement in connecting academic pursuits with experiential learning.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-subhead field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Computer science and math major Tanisha Shende ’26 combines high-level AI research with global policy to create equitable technology.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">News Story</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2026-03-23T12:00:00Z">Mon, 03/23/2026 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">By Kate Martin ’26</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=3846">Engaged Liberal Arts</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2358">Undergraduate Research</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2381">Bonner Center</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=4080">Fellowships</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=4153">Computer Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=4150">Mathematics</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/computer-science" hreflang="und">Computer Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/mathematics" hreflang="und">Mathematics</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Tanya Rosen-Jones ’97</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/2026-04/Tanisha.png?itok=jOWkW0yd" width="640" height="480" alt="Tanisha Shende."> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-article-header field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">0</div> Mon, 23 Mar 2026 17:36:24 +0000 kviancou 773267 at Finding Confidence and Community Through سԹ’s Bonner Scholars Program /news/finding-confidence-and-community-through-oberlins-bonner-scholars-program <span>Finding Confidence and Community Through سԹ’s Bonner Scholars Program</span> <span><span>kviancou</span></span> <span><time datetime="2026-03-23T13:05:03-04:00" title="Monday, March 23, 2026 - 13:05">Mon, 03/23/2026 - 13:05</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Erica Vu ’26 credits the <a href="/bcsl/programs/bonner-scholars">Bonner Scholars Program</a> within the <a href="/center-engaged-liberal-arts">Center for Engaged Liberal Arts (CELA)</a> with helping her find her confidence, her community, and her sense of purpose at سԹ.</p><p>As a Bonner Scholar, Vu has taken on a wide range of volunteer projects and leadership roles while at سԹ.
