The hour-long piece, based on Book IV of Virgil’s ancient epic poem Aeneid, has evolved into one of the most iconic operas in British history.

Dido and Aeneas will be performed at سԹ’s Fairchild Chapel (inside Bosworth Hall, 50 W. Lorain St.) at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 15 and 16. A 3 p.m. matinee will take place Sunday, April 17, at Cleveland's Harkness Chapel (11200 Bellflower Rd.) on the Case campus. Admission to all performances is free.

Written in 1680, the opera recounts the love story between Queen Dido of Carthage and the Trojan warrior Aeneas, who abandons his lover when witches intervene. The production is made possible by Jason Goldberg, a fifth-year student at سԹ who has produced and directed the opera as his final project toward a rare independent major in opera directing.

"The more I researched the work, the more I wanted to do a historically informed version of this masterpiece because the story’s themes of love lost, honorable intentions, social pressures, and base desires are all very relevant today,” says Goldberg, who also majors in voice performance. “Incorporating Baroque gesture and stylized movement into the production allows the opera to live in its natural setting and highlights its drama and themes."

The production features a cast of سԹ vocal performance majors as well as dancers from Case Western Reserve University's Baroque Dance Ensemble in numbers choreographed by Case instructor Julie Andrijeski. Nicholas Capozzoli, who is pursuing a master of music in historical performance at سԹ, serves as harpsichordist and music director, leading an ensemble of سԹ Conservatory student instrumentalists who will perform on Baroque instruments.

To learn more, read ClevelandClassical’s feature story about the production.

News Releases

Tue, 04/05/2016 - 12:00

Julie Anna Gulenko

Conservatory

Historical Performance

Opera Theater

Historical Performance

Vocal Studies

Jason Goldberg works with cast members at a Dido and Aeneas rehearsal in سԹ. Out of that period came Alcina, an adaptation of a 16th-century epic poem that premiered in 1735 and then all but disappeared for almost 200 years. Today, it is widely regarded as one of the composer's most beautiful works.

سԹ Opera Theater will present Handel’s otherworldly Alcina for four performances beginning at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 9. Additional shows include 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 11 and 12, and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 13. All performances take place in Hall Auditorium (67 N. When she tires of her suitors, she changes them into flowers, rocks, and waves, where they remain locked. Her downfall comes when she falls in love with one of them, and he sees her and the island for what they really are.”

At times unmistakably absurd in its depiction of a Renaissance-era alternative universe, Alcina is powered by its gorgeous arias and supported by rich costumes that bring the characters to life.

Despite its far-flung setting, the opera is grounded in themes that resonate in the real world of today. “It is an opera about loyalty and faithfulness, and about seeing the world for what it really is,” says Field. “It is about the triumph of true devotion over surface images.”

Tickets to Alcina are $10 ($8 for all students), available by calling 800-371-0178, online at oberlin.edu/artsguide, or by visiting سԹ’s Central Ticket Service at Hall Auditorium weekdays from noon-5 p.m.

News Releases

Wed, 03/02/2016 - 12:00

Erich Burnett

Conservatory

Opera Theater

Vocal Studies

Off

false

Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:01:50 +0000 eburnett 9646 at Marilyn Horne Returns for Voice Master Classes Feb. 19 & 21 /news/marilyn-horne-returns-voice-master-classes-feb-19-21 Marilyn Horne Returns for Voice Master Classes Feb. 19 & 21 eburnett Mon, 11/07/2016 - 13:01

Marilyn Horne, the celebrated mezzo-soprano who has been called perhaps “the most influential singer in American history” by Opera News, returns to سԹ this week to work with voice students and lead a pair of public master classes.

Horne's visit, made possible through a gift by philanthropist Stephen Rubin, will be highlighted by master classes in Finney Chapel at 8 p.m. Friday, February 19, and 2 p.m. Sunday, February 21. Months of preparation go into taking a work from concept to stage, and the effort of countless people is required to present four spectacular performances each semester.

In the case of سԹ Opera Theater’s upcoming production of the Benjamin Britten opera The Rape of Lucretia—which runs Wednesday through Sunday, November 11-15—those preparations extend far beyond the stage.

Thanks to the efforts of faculty and administrators from multiple corners of campus, a series of complementary programs has been organized to help audiences contextualize the content in Lucretia from a variety of perspectives.

The programs follow the success of سԹ Opera Theater’s fall 2014 production of Kurt Weill’s Street Scene; that opera served as the cornerstone of a similar series of related talks and other events dubbed “Weill Week.”

The Lucretia activity centers around three main events: a panel discussion that explores the relevance and implications of Lucretia in modern times, another focusing on musicological aspects of Britten’s opera, and a gallery talk and self-guided tour devoted to art depicting tragic women throughout the ages.

The first program, Violence and Virtue: Framing Lucretia in the 21st Century, focuses on the significance of the production in contemporary America and in what ways it can inspire productive conversations. It features a panel made up of سԹ faculty members representing an array of disciplines: Carol Lasser (history), who serves as director of Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies at سԹ; Claire Solomon (Hispanic studies); Wendy Kozol (comparative American studies); and Renee Romano (Africana studies and comparative American studies). It takes place at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 11, in Stull Recital Hall, on the third floor of Bibbins Hall (77 West College St.).

“The advantage of being a college and conservatory combined is that we have the structures to really have these conversations,” says Meredith Raimondo, سԹ’s Title IX coordinator and the facilitator of the panel. Raimondo oversees سԹ’s system for responding to and preventing all forms of gender-based harassment and discrimination. She sees her job as a way of fulfilling سԹ’s mission to educate—and to help remove all barriers to education.

Among the themes Raimondo expects to see emerge in the discussion are the relationship between sexual violence and war, how we look back at myth and history, and how we use creative work as a way to process and move beyond violence as a solution. Lucretia not only holds historical significance, she adds, but it also functions transhistorically. “Gender-based violence is a longstanding problem,” says Raimondo, “so I have a real belief that some of the solutions lie in art.”

A second discussion, Reading Britten: The Rape of Lucretia in Context, explores musicological and theoretical perspectives on the work and addresses such issues as why tragic women have played key roles in opera throughout the ages. The panel includes Danielle Ward-Griffin, assistant professor of music history at Christopher Newport University, and three members of سԹ’s faculty: Lucretia director Jonathon Field and music theorists Andrew Pau and Jan Miyake. Reading Britten takes place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 11, in Hall Auditorium (67 N. Main St.), immediately preceding the opening-night performance of the opera at 8.

“We choose stories that are powerful,” says Miyake, the panel’s moderator, who adds that it is important to preface the performance with a clear sense of why the story is important and what power it has. Lucretia occupies an important and complex space: Tragic female roles are omnipresent throughout the history of opera, after all.

Finally, a gallery talk and self-guided tour called Women in the Ancient World focuses on tragic depictions of women in works throughout history, using examples from the collection of the Allen Memorial Art Museum. Curated by Andaleeb Banta, the series includes the painting “Death of Lucretia” (attributed to Domenico Beccafumi, c. 1515) and a pictograph called “The Rape of Persephone” (Gottlieb, 1943), among others. The talk will be led by Professor of English Nick Jones and includes Banta and Assistant Professor of Classics Chris Trinacty. It takes place at noon Thursday, November 12, at the Allen Memorial Art Museum (87 N. Main St.).

In addition to the upcoming programs, the two cast members playing Lucretia—Rebecca Printz (Wednesday/Saturday cast) and Micaela Aldridge (Friday/Sunday cast)—received guidance from counselors at the Nord Center’s Sexual Assault Services, to better understand the psychology of victims like the opera's Lucretia. Nord Center counselors will attend each performance of the opera to serve as a resource to all guests.

News Releases

Thu, 11/05/2015 - 12:00

Faith Roberts

Allen Memorial Art Museum

Conservatory

Music Theory

Opera Theater

Music Theory

Vocal Studies

Off

false

Photo-Illustration by Jacob Gilbert '15

Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:02:04 +0000 eburnett 9971 at Mozart's La Finta Giardiniera Springs into سԹ March 11-15 /news/mozarts-la-finta-giardiniera-springs-oberlin-march-11-15 Mozart's La Finta Giardiniera Springs into سԹ March 11-15 eburnett Mon, 11/07/2016 - 13:03

More than 200 years after his death, the operas of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart—The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, and Don Giovanni among them—remain timeless in their appeal.

This month, سԹ Opera Theater explores a lesser-known work by the master, composed when he was only 18 years old: La finta giardiniera ("The pretend garden-girl").

Though it was written at a time when Mozart struggled to find audiences for his operas, La finta giardiniera serves up an early glimpse of the qualities audiences grew to love about his later works: his sophisticated use of the orchestra to enhance the on-stage drama, his deep exploration of emotion, his flair for innovation, and his intuitive understanding of what makes humans think and act the way they do.

Or, as سԹ Opera Theater Director Jonathon Field puts it: "If you think Lorde writes good music at that age, you should hear this."

Set in the garden of a provincial Italian adjudicator, La finta giardiniera reveals the tangled lives and loves of the residents of an Italian town—each of them complete with a hidden past that they desperately hope to shed.

"They soon discover that the best way to reinvent yourself is not by becoming someone else, but by forgiveness and understanding," says Field. "Britten's operas always had an oppressed innocent. The show opens November 6, with additional performances November 8 through 10 in Hall Auditorium on the سԹ campus.

Contrary to popular belief, Engelbert Humperdinck’s most popular work is not just for children—and in this unique rendition, it’s barely for children at all. Centered on two young siblings who find themselves lost in the woods, the story contains underlying themes of starvation and violence that provide a dark edge and keep adults fastened in their seats.

As envisioned by سԹ Opera Theater Director Jonathon Field, this Hänsel und Gretel is recommended for audiences 12 years and older.

“The premise that I'm starting from is that the family is poor, ignorant, and starving,” says Field. “This atmosphere of violence, rather than stopping the children, enables them to overcome the Witch. In fact, that act of killing the witch empowers them in a very strange way.”

In the role of the Witch, سԹ Opera Theater welcomes the return of mezzo-soprano Karen Jesse, a 2004 graduate who played two key roles in سԹ’s last production of Hänsel und Gretel, in 2003. Humperdinck’s enthralling score, performed by the سԹ Chamber Orchestra, will be conducted by Raphael Jiménez, سԹ’s director of orchestras.

Performances of Hänsel und Gretel will take place at 8 p.m. on November 6, 8, and 9, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 10.

Tickets are $15 ($10 for seniors, سԹ College staff, and alumni, and $6 for students), and all seats are reserved. Shrader, hailed as “a gifted young tenor” by the Washington Post, will perform at 7:00 pm in Warner Concert Hall at the سԹ Conservatory of Music, 77 W. College Street. Admission is free.

Shrader’s program will include lyric French songs by Fauré, Turina’s Poema en forma de canciones, Handel’s “Un momento di contento” from Alcina, and selected works by Strauss, Rossini, Ethelbert Nevin and Virgil Thomson. The performance will also include the world premiere of Iain Bell’s the Undying Splendour, a song cycle setting of the wartime poems of Sgt. John William Streets inspired by his service as a British soldier during World War I. Iain Bell is known as a prolific young composer whose song cycles have been performed by singers such as Diana Damrau, and in venues from Wigmore Hall to the Munich Opera Festival.

The 2012–13 season has been an eventful one for Shrader. His debut at the Metropolitan Opera was met with glowing praise, as he opened the season with a production of Thomas Adés’s the Tempest, conducted by the composer. The New York Times called his performance “sweet-voiced,” “bright,” and “appealing,” and the Washington Post described him as “a gifted young tenor.” Shrader returned to the Metropolitan Opera in December to sing Almaviva in the Barber of Seville. On March 8, Shrader will give his Carnegie Weill Hall debut.

Shrader’s involvement with the Metropolitan Opera began in 2007, when he was selected as one of six finalists out of 1,500 participants in the Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions. He made his U.S. main stage debut in 2008 with the San Francisco Opera’s production of L’Eliser d’Amor, where his performance was described as “natural and effortless.” (San Francisco Classical Voice) His European debut occurred with the 2009–10 season performance of Die Zauberflöte with the Grande Theatre de Bordeaux. He has since performed in numerous productions with companies that include the Opera Theater of St. Louis, Sante Fe Opera, and Bavarian State Opera, as well as concert appearances with the Cleveland Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, and St. Louis Symphony.

During his time at سԹ, Schrader was a student of Professor of Voice Salvatore Champagne. Following Shrader’s win in the Met Council Auditions in 2007, Champagne said, “I knew it wouldn’t be long before Alek returned to the Met as a full-fledged leading artist.”

He adds, “Alek’s expert vocalism and superb musicianship will serve the Met well and represent what the Conservatory’s vocal studies division has to offer.”

Fact sheet

Friday, March 1, 2013, 7:00 p.m.

Alek Shrader ’07, tenor
Keun-A Lee, piano
Warner Concert Hall
77 W. He made his house debut as Ferdinand in Thomas Adès’ modern masterpiece, the Tempest, conducted by the composer himself, and returned to sing Almaviva in the English version of the Barber of Seville. Abroad, he sang Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola at the Hamburgische Staatsoper before returning to the U.S. for a North American recital tour.
