Robin will portray the story of Sara Lucy Bagby, an enslaved woman from Virginia who was the last&nbsp;person in the United States forced to return to slavery in the South in 1861 under the Fugitive Slave Act. Bagby&nbsp;escaped via the Underground Railroad and made her way to Cleveland, Ohio, before being captured, arrested,&nbsp;and returned to slavery in Virginia. After Emancipation, Bagby walked to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to leave the&nbsp;South. She ultimately settled in Cleveland, where she died in 1906. She is buried in Woodland Cemetery.</p> <p>"The historical re-enactment of Sara Lucy Bagby's story connects the larger story of the African Diaspora in the&nbsp;United States, specifically Northeast Ohio, says Alonso Avila, Information Literacy and Student Success Librarian&nbsp;at 厙ぴ勛圖 College. It invites us into an intergenerational experience and conversation at 厙ぴ勛圖 which is one of&nbsp;many sites that make up the Underground Railroad."</p> <p><br> An initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read&nbsp;broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the power of a shared&nbsp;reading experience.&nbsp;厙ぴ勛圖 is one of 62 communities nationwide participating in the 2022-2023 NEA Big Read. And as publishers increasingly request processing fees and subsidies for articles and book-length works, it shouldnt be that only scholars at the best-resourced institutions get a chance to get published.</p> <p>Although sponsored by liberal arts college libraries, Lever Press will not publish only works from faculty in those institutions. Were looking for work that reflects the identity and characteristic emphasis on excellence in teaching and research that is the hallmark of our sponsoring colleges, says Mark Edington, Lever Presss publisher. As weve reflected on how a press founded by these colleges can offer a distinct voice and contribution to the world of scholarly publishing, we keep returning to the idea of the books that all of us encountered as undergraduates that opened our eyes and changed our lives. Were looking for titles that can teach what they know, that reveal to the reader not just a recitation of findings but a narrative of discovery.</p> <p>Over the next five years, Lever Press is expected to publish some 60 titlesall of which will be available both in print (for a small cost) and online (for no cost). Titles will be available both as downloadable files and as screen-readable web pages. Production will be undertaken by the Michigan Publishings emerging <a href="http://fulcrum.org">Fulcrum digital publishing platform</a>, made possible with a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. </p> <p>We are very pleased to be working as a partner in the Lever Press initiative, says Charles Watkinson, associate university librarian for publishing at the University of Michigan Library and director of University of Michigan Press. As well as extending the impact of their work through open access online and handsome print editions, were excited to work with Levers authors to create enriched digital publications that reflect the highest standards of peer review and scholarly merit.</p> <p>Lever Press is already accepting proposals from scholars for individual works and series of works. Proposals for individual works are welcome from faculty and scholars anywhere. Proposals for series should come from faculty or teams of faculty from one or more of Levers sponsoring institutions. list of these institutions can be found at http://www.leverpress.org/who-we-are/.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">News Releases</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2016-07-06T12:00:00Z">Wed, 07/06/2016 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Communications Staff</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2384">Libraries</a></div> </div> Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:01:20 +0000 Anonymous 9271 at
