<link>/</link> <description/> <language>en</language> <item> <title>Cooper International Competition Returns to 厙ぴ勛圖 July 25-31, 2015 /news/cooper-international-competition-returns-oberlin-july-25-31 <span>Cooper International Competition Returns to 厙ぴ勛圖 July 25-31, 2015</span> <span><span>eburnett</span></span> <span><time datetime="2016-11-07T13:02:25-05:00" title="Monday, November 7, 2016 - 13:02">Mon, 11/07/2016 - 13:02</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Exceptional young artists hailing from seven countries and across America come together at 厙ぴ勛圖 July 25-31 for the sixth-annual <a href="http://www2.oberlin.edu/cooper/">Thomas and Evon Cooper International Competition for violin</a>.</p> <p>Presented by the 厙ぴ勛圖 Conservatory of Music and the <a href="http://www.clevelandorchestra.com/reserve/index.aspx?performanceNumber=12497">Cleveland Orchestra</a>, the 2015 Cooper Competition features 21 musicians ranging in age from 14 to 18, each of them vying for a top prize of $10,000 and three full-tuition scholarships to attend the 厙ぴ勛圖 Conservatory.</p> <p>The competition begins with five days of performances on the 厙ぴ勛圖 campus: Semifinal Rounds Saturday through Monday, July 25-27; a Concerto Round on Tuesday, July 28; and Recital Finals on Wednesday, July 29.</p> <p>The excitement culminates with the Concerto Finals at Severance Hall on Friday, July 31, as three finalists each perform a complete concerto with the Cleveland Orchestra, under the direction of Jahja Ling.</p> <p>All performances at 厙ぴ勛圖including an Honors Recital on Thursday, July 30take place in Warner Concert Hall and are free and open to the public. Tickets for the Concerto Finals at Severance Hall range from $15-$25 and are available through the Cleveland Orchestra by calling 800-686-1141 or visiting <a href="http://www.clevelandorchestra.com/reserve/index.aspx?performanceNumber=12497">clevelandorchestra.com</a>. Complimentary admission is available for students.</p> <p>Selected through video auditions, this years Cooper participants represent China, South Korea, Australia, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, and the United States. Each participant will be critiqued by a jury made up of distinguished performers and pedagogues including 厙ぴ勛圖 violin faculty Gregory Fulkerson (co-director and jury chair), David Bowlin (co-director), and Marilyn McDonald. Also on the jury are five venerable teachers from throughout the world: Norwegian violinist and educator Peter Herresthal, Seattle Conservatory of Music founder and director Margaret Pressley, Austrian performer and educator Dora Schwarzberg, Central Conservatory of Music Professor Tong Weidong, and Northwestern University Professor Almita Vamos.</p> <p>Jury members will present a total of eight <a href="/cooper-competition">master classes</a>all of them free and open to the publicin 厙ぴ勛圖's Clonick Hall on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, July 28-30.</p> <p>Follow 厙ぴ勛圖 Conservatory on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/oberlinconservatory">Facebook</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/厙ぴ勛圖Con">Twitter</a> for updates throughout the competition.</p> <p>Cleveland's public radio station <a href="http://wclv.ideastream.org/">WCLV 104.9 FM</a> will broadcast the Recital Finals live from 厙ぴ勛圖 (7 p.m. Wednesday, July 29) and the Concerto Finals live from Severance Hall (8 p.m. Friday, July 31).</p> <p>For more information, including a complete schedule and participant information, visit <a href="/cooper-competition">www.oberlin.edu/cooper</a>.</p> <p><b>ABOUT THE COOPER COMPETITION:</b> Sponsored by Thomas and Evon Cooper, the Cooper International Competition debuted in summer 2010 for pianists, followed in 2011 by a competition for violinists; the competition alternates annually between the two instruments. Both formats are open to musicians between the ages of 13 and 18. Mr. Cooper is a 1978 厙ぴ勛圖 College graduate and a member of 厙ぴ勛圖s Board of Trustees; his wife, Evon, is a pianist and private piano teacher. They reside near Boston.</p> <p><b>OBERLIN AND THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA:</b> The relationship between 厙ぴ勛圖 and the Cleveland Orchestra dates back nearly a century, beginning with the philanthropy of John Long Severance, an 1885 厙ぴ勛圖 graduate and flutist who founded the Musical Arts Association, under which the Cleveland Orchestra was established in 1918. Severance and his wife were major donors for the construction of the Cleveland Orchestras home, Severance Hall. Since the series inception, more than 1,000 of the worlds most accomplished musicians, conductors, orchestras, and chamber ensembles have graced the stage of historic Finney Chapel.</p> <p>The upcoming season opens September 30 with a performance by the <b>Calder Quartet</b> (pictured, top), 厙ぴ勛圖s quartet in residence for the 2014-16 academic years. The season also includes a visit by the world-renowned <b>Cleveland Orchestra</b> in April, featuring celebrated 厙ぴ勛圖 pianist <b>Jeremy Denk</b> in a performance of Bart籀ks Piano Concerto No. 3.</p> <p>The complete 2014-15 season is as follows:</p> <p><b>Tue. Sep. 30:</b> Calder Quartet. Called superb by the <i>New York Times</i> and one of Americas great string quartets by the <i>Los Angeles Times</i>, the quartet was awarded the 2014 Avery Fisher Career Grant.</p> <p><b>Tue. Feb. 10:</b> Garrick Ohlsson, piano. A leading exponent of the music of Chopin, Ohlsson boasts an astonishing range of<br> repertoire. He was awarded the 2014 Jean Gimbel Lane Prize in Piano Performance.</p> <p><b>Fri. Feb. 20:</b> <b>St. Lawrence String Quartet</b>. Celebrating 25 years together, the prolific ensemble performs more than 120 concerts each year, specializing in both traditional quartet repertoire and adventuresome modern compositions.</p> <p><b>Sat. Feb. 28:</b> Bang on a Can All-Stars. An amplified amalgam of sounds spanning a world of influences, Bang on a Can delights in shattering boundaries and exploring new sonic frontiers. Theyve collaborated with everyone from Ornette Coleman to DJ Spooky.</p> <p><b>Thu. Apr. 2:</b> <b>John Relyea</b>, bass-baritone and <b>Warren Jones</b>, piano. Winner of the 2009 Beverly Sills Award and the 2003 Richard Tucker Award, Relyea is a celebrated vocalist with credits in the worlds top opera houses and in concert with orchestras around the country. Jones, named 2010 Collaborative Pianist of the Year by <i>Musical America</i>, is the principal pianist for Camerata Pacifica.</p> <p><b>Sun. Apr. 12:</b> <b>Jennifer Koh</b>. Called a superbly gifted violinist by the <i>New York Times</i>, the 厙ぴ勛圖 alumna has performed with the worlds finest orchestras and in classrooms through her innovative Music Messenger outreach program.</p> <p><b>Fri. Apr. 24:</b> The Cleveland Orchestra. The orchestras rich history with 厙ぴ勛圖 spans 95 years and more than 200 performances.
