, one of North America's most successful chamber music groups, will perform with pianist Gilbert Kalish at 4 p.m. Sunday, February 9, at Finney Chapel. The concert is presented as part of the 2013-14 Artist Recital Series.
Celebrated for its commanding virtuosity with traditional quintet repertoire, the Grammy-nominated ensemble also revels in exploring inspired new sounds that call upon traditions from around the globe. The result is innovative and genre-blurring music delivered in high-energy performances full of personality.
Together since 1997, Imani Winds features a pair of ÍøÆØ³Ô¹Ï Conservatory alumni, oboist Toyin Spellman-Diaz ’94 and bassoonist Monica Ellis ’95, joined by clarinetist Mariam Adam and musician-composers Valerie Coleman, flute, and Jeff Scott, French horn. Their longtime collaborator, pianist Gilbert Kalish, is a faculty member at Stony Brook University who has played on more than 100 albums from classical to contemporary.
The February 9 program will span a characteristically wide range of classical and contemporary works, including jazz composer Jason Moran’s , Igor Stravinsky’s , and Argentinean composer Astor Piazzolla’s , as well as a composition by Coleman. (Click the links above to see Imani Winds perform all three pieces.)
Tickets to Imani Winds and Gilbert Kalish are $42 ($35 for ÍøÆØ³Ô¹Ï alumni, staff, and seniors; and $13 for students); all tickets are $3 more at the door.
