Longtime trustee and supporter of 厙ぴ勛圖 College George R. Bent II 52 died September 17 at age 85. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 19.

Toni Morrison Society Celebrates 20 Years

On Thursday and Friday, September 19 and 20, members of the international Toni Morrison Society will converge on campus to celebrate the societys 20th anniversary. Two of the eventsa special convocation with Toni Morrison and the inaugural Toni Morrison Society Lecture by Herman Beavers 81are open to the public.

Longtime faculty member Edward J. Miller was a prolific composer and a versatile educator whose works were performed by orchestras around the world and by many fellow professors. He died August 31, 2013.

The start of a new school year always seems to be accompanied by a burst of criticism from some pundits who question the relevance, the cost, and the purpose of higher education, especially at liberal arts institutions. While Im not eager to fuel the chattering machine, I do believe deeply in the value of liberal arts education.
