Longtime trustee and supporter of ���سԹ� College George R. Bent II ”52 died September 17 at age 85. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 19.

On Thursday and Friday, September 19 and 20, members of the international Toni Morrison Society will converge on campus to celebrate the society’s 20th anniversary. Two of the events—a special convocation with Toni Morrison and the inaugural Toni Morrison Society Lecture by Herman Beavers ’81—are open to the public.

As dean of the Division of Student Life, Eric Estes oversees Student Health Services, the Counseling Center, the Multicultural Resource Center, the Class Dean System, the Office of Safety and Security, and more. As we embark on the 2013-14 academic year, ���سԹ� OnCampus asked him if there are new developments or initiatives in his division.

I’m especially pleased to have Wendell Berry and Wes Jackson as our guests tonight. They will discuss with ���سԹ�’s David Orr what progress environmentalism has made over the past 35 years, as well as specific aspects of their work.

Longtime faculty member Edward J. Miller was a prolific composer and a versatile educator whose works were performed by orchestras around the world and by many fellow professors. He died August 31, 2013.

The start of a new school year always seems to be accompanied by a burst of criticism from some pundits who question the relevance, the cost, and the purpose of higher education, especially at liberal arts institutions. While I’m not eager to fuel the chattering machine, I do believe deeply in the value of liberal arts education.
